Before you can lead others, you must be able to lead yourself.

Before you can lead others, you must be able to lead yourself. If you cannot lead yourself, others won’t follow you. Leadership is demanding and requires noble disciplines. It takes an elevated sense of mastery with practice, skill, desire and commitment. It is the fundamental and necessary building block to greatness. Set your standards high. Do the best you are capable of doing. To lead yourself successfully is knowing you made the effort to become the best you are capable of. The better you are at leading yourself the better the chance you are at having a positive impact on others.

The Law Of The Lid 

Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness

In the book 21 laws of leadership, John Maxwell’s number one Law is Law of the Lid. The Law is: leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness. Basically, this law states that how well you lead determines how effective you are. Thus far you have been focusing on your own results and working on becoming the best person you can possibly be. Now as you step into leadership, it is time to develop the skills necessary to lead others. Until you can develop the skills to influence other people, you will be limited to being a solo performer. Your ability to develop your leadership skills will greatly enhance the results of everyone you are leading. While leading a team, you now serves as the lid of that team. If your leadership ability isn't very good, then your team effectiveness can never be greater than that. If you are a top level leader, then you will have a top level team. This can be a hard thing to own up to because this means that the lack of success amongst the people you are leading is essentially because of your capacity to lead your team. But also on the flip side, the success of your team is also based on your capacity to lead them. Your leadership lid can only be increased as your leadership skills are increased. There has never been a team in the history of mankind that has managed to outgrow their leadership level. Your leadership lid contains your success. But here’s the good news – you can INCREASE your leadership lid! And it gets even better! Whenever you increase your leadership lid, this will have a positive increase on your team's success. Starting now, you need to invest in ways to increase your leadership skills. Do as much as you can to seek out ways to learn. Become obsessed with learning about how to become the most effective leader. Seek Learning - if you want to lead then invest 40% of your time into developing  yourself first. - ceo of visa.
